About Alice Malloy-Chang

I paint stories captured in a single frame. My work focuses on calm, atmospheric scenes where the emotion often lives in the space around the subject — the quiet sky, the open room, the shadow on a wall. Whether I’m painting dogs, people, or simple shapes caught in golden light, my goal is to create a mood that feels both intimate and contemplative.I’m drawn to storytelling, subtle color, and the contrast between light and shadow. Each piece holds a small narrative: what just happened, what might happen next, or what the viewer feels in that quiet pause. In addition to my studio practice, I am actively involved in supporting the local arts community. I was honored to be named Escondido Art Association’s Volunteer of the Year (2025) for my work helping artists navigate exhibitions, technology, and gallery systems. My artwork has been exhibited throughout Escondido, including public placements such as the Escondido Public Library, where art is accessible to the broader community.Whether through painting or service, my focus remains the same: creating spaces — visual or physical — where people can slow down, reflect, and connect.

Process & Themes

My Approach

My work is very story-driven and dreamlike. I’m drawn to animals, imagined worlds, and quiet moments of wonder. I often use animals as emotional stand-ins—they carry curiosity, calm, and a sense of inner life that people instantly recognize. My process is intuitive and slow. I let pieces unfold rather than forcing them, focusing more on mood and feeling than explanation. I want my work to feel gentle, thoughtful, and a little magical—like a pause in the middle of a busy world.
